![]() ![]() When actually playing games, we’re going to use a combination of RetroArch (for lower-end systems) and standalone emulators. Since the Retroid Pocket devices take a while to ship, I would recommend that you build your ROM library now, if you haven’t already. You could also use a USB hub to plug in multiple controllers at once, but note that if the controller requires USB power you will likely need to get a powered USB hub like this one. Note that in order to use a USB controller, you will also need an OTG adapter to plug the controller into the device’s USB-C port. You could use a bluetooth controller like the 8BitDo SN30 Pro, or a wired controller like the Betop BD2E. Speaking of controllers, there are plenty of options out there, but I prefer to use something that’s somewhat retro-friendly. You can use a larger card than these but then you’ll have a card that costs more than the device itself, and are you really going to play more than 512GB of games at once? 128GB cards: A 256GB or 512GB card will allow you to store even more of those larger games. A 128GB card will allow you to load EVERY 8-bit and 16-bit game out there, just all of the arcade games that work, and quite a few PS1, Dreamcast, PSP, GameCube, PS2, and Sega CD games (those systems have the largest file sizes). In general, I would expect to pay $20 for a 128GB card, $30 for a 256GB card, and $60 for a 512GB. The prices fluctuate all the time, so keep an eye out for deals. In general, I recommend the cards listed below, in order or preference. I recommend using a card from reputable brands like SanDisk or Samsung to use in your device. ![]() Sandisk (left) and Samsung (right) microSD cards Overall, it might be worth the peace of mind to have fast shipping and an easy return process. However, the Amazon listing is available for Prime shipping and you can also get easy returns in case something goes wrong. However, I would say if you prefer 4:3 aspect ratio screens or want the absolute cheapest model available, then the RP2+ might still be worth considering for you.Ĭurrently the Retroid Pocket 2+ and Retroid Pocket 3 are also available via Amazon, but the price will be quite a bit higher depending on where you live. Between the RP2+ and the RP3, I would recommend the RP3 as it is an improvement over the previous model in just about every way. The 2GB model is currently being sold on AliExpress as well. This will make the Android interface feel snappier and will also help with running Android games. The price difference is $10 and well worth it for the 50% increase in RAM. The Retroid Pocket 3 is available in two versions: 2GB or 3GB of RAM. The Retroid Pocket 3+ and Retroid Pocket Flip are the most recent releases, and provide a significant performance improvement over previous models. You can check their delivery dashboard to get a sense of what they are currently shipping, but bear in mind that this dashboard is not always up to date. I would expect at least two weeks from the time of purchase to delivery, but that fulfillment may be delayed due to high demand. All models are sold directly via Retroid’s website. ![]()

So John has decided to do something about it. And those bags will, without intervention, keep piling up and lasting thousands of years – probably longer than the human race. Frighteningly, all of them are still out there, piled up on top of every others year’s output. While many of the larger ones use silos, that estimate is still beyond conservative so it’s likely more. ![]() If we crassly assume America’s 7,000 craft breweries all only brewed 5% all-malt pale ales in 2018, that means they used around 18 million malt bags. Now, just in case that hasn’t hit you like a freight train, let’s give that some context. John and his team have identified the fact that malt bags aren’t recyclable or biodegradable. John didn’t stop there either, and here is the point of our story. His solar panels didn’t come cheap either – and he donates the extra power he gives back to the grid right to the local old people’s home. Kimmich insists that long term it is cheaper, but it is rare to find a young business thinking that far ahead – it is a huge risk to make such a large financial outlay at the start and the ACID room isn’t the only example of this. ![]() In fact, it probably cost more than most of the brewhouses in action in the UK at the moment. The result of this process is that The Alchemist – a large commercial craft brewery – puts out significantly less waste than a 3-bed family home. The mulch left behind is siphoned off into blue waste barrels and sent to the University of Vermont, where they are used as biofuel. The remaining solids clump together, leaving behind water suitable for treatment by the local government plant. All the waste liquid and semi-solid waste is pumped in, and a special bacterium eats away at it while oxygen is pumped through. John explains that this is an aerobic digester. Inside, a steel block the size of a shipping container hums noisily. Walking through that door you are hit by the smell of funky chemical reactions. “If we assume all of America’s 7,000 craft breweries only brewed 5% all-malt pale ales in 2018, that means they used around 18,130,000 un-recyclable malt bags.” From there it is pumped into the room behind the ACID sign. Instead, it trickles down into giant holding tanks beneath the brewery. In fact, none of what comes out of an Alchemist tank – the trub, hops, grain, waste water – goes down the drain. Kimmich has gone well beyond that in a desperate bid to have as little impact on the environment as possible. Connections with farmers, recycled materials, hot water recirculation. But they rarely venture beyond the systems already set out for them. Most breweries have sustainable practises in place. And we did get that, but it was the intro, not the finale. We were stood near those classic giant plastic cubes (IBCs), and I presumed the normal spiel was coming – “we send our grain to local animal farmers”, “we use cans because they are easier to recycle”. That was my reaction when he said “I’m gonna tell you something that will end up on the cutting room floor, but I think it’s important to tell.” Cofounder John Kimmich was nearing the end of the tour he has given a thousand beer geeks and industry folk, and had got to the point where most people would be wondering where the first beer as going to come from. We were at the Alchemist in Vermont – the place where NEIPA was first brewed and still the maker of its most famous example, Heady Topper. But the most incredible thing we found out there was behind a door bearing the word ACID. It is the home of a beer style that didn’t only launch a thousand other breweries and change our notion of the IPA, but that affect the recipe creation of lots of other styles and even led to a revival of the pilsner. Our New England trip, during which we shot our first ever feature length documentary, was eye opening in so many ways – the beer, the people, the scenery. You know that the water and trub goes down the drain, the spent malt out to farmers, and the beer out to customers. This stainless city has only a few ways out, and so does the waste product. But wherever you go, you can trace the route that the water, barley, hops and yeast take on their transformation and journey out of the brewery. There are, of course, variations and different ideas on how certain processes should work – perhaps there’s a lauter tun not a false bottom, a whirlpool, a centrifuge, a decoction vessel, hop rockets, or horizontal tanks. Over the 8,000 years that humans have made beer, we’ve got the equipment pretty much down. It’s often said that once you’ve seen one brewery you’ve seen them all. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We'll notify you via e-mail of your refund once we've received and processed the returned item. The only other thing we ran into is the radiator was starting to leak. The tensioners as well, there are tensioners that have bearings that rub against the timing belt, idler pulleys, tensioners, those all get changed at the same time. Timing belt, oil seals to a certain degree. Was there any other issues?īernie: Yeah, so I was going to say you know, like the water pump, to us it's a standard job. And that's definitely a something we don't want to do. And it's driven by the timing belt, so if it seizes up, the bearing fails, it seizes up, then it'll damage the timing belt. Not at any large rate, but some coolant has leaked and with this kind of mileage, I mean, not doing the water pump is kind of a crazy thing, because it will fail for sure over the next while.Īnd then you have to take everything back apart again. It goes through a passageway and can run out, but you can see this festering of pink here, there's cooling that's been leaking. This prevents coolant from actually running onto the timing belt. Anyways, the water pump was one item we replaced. They'd be leaking oil all over the place. Whereas in the olden days of seals, sometimes we'd take them out and they'd be hard as hockey pucks. ![]() Sometimes lasting I don't want to say the life of the car, whatever that is, but they may last for decades without failing. Your oil seals were usually leaking oil, but again manufacturers make them out of much better materials. By the time your timing belt was worn out. We also changed the tensioners and most of the time we change the front engine oil seals as well because they tend to leak and cause problems. Mark: What else did you replace with the timing belt?īernie: Well, the water pump for one. So things are not fully back together, but at least it gives a view of the engine compartment. You can see it's kind of sitting on an angle. As I said, these are with all the covers installed, but power steering pump is kind of loose here. This is the variable valve timing actuator.Īnd there's the belt. I don't normally say too many bad things about Toyota's they eventually they'll well, it's a Lexus, but still a Toyota. They made them more reliable, with less frequent replacement.īernie: It's a V8. So you can see the belt in here, but it's quite a wide belt, well over an inch wide.Īnd as I was saying, like in the olden days, they were much thinner and they never lasted as long, but manufacturers got smart. I didn't take pictures all the way through the process, but this is one of the cam shaft covers back on. This is actually the new timing belt installed. So there's a view of the front of the engine. You can actually look at a couple of pictures right now and it kind of gives you an idea of what the belt looks like. And they evolved into curved tooth belts with that they're much wider. They used to be these skinny little belts that had square teeth. I think it's always should be replaced, but they're just much more reliable timing belts in the, I mean, I'm working on cars for a long time. And so they will generally last quite a lot longer than the service interval, but I wouldn't recommend you do it because if it breaks, I'm not giving any advice here to leave it longer. For some reason my kilometre calculator isn't working right now, but I think that's somewhere in a 150,000 kilometres, somewhere around there, 150, 160. Mark: What's the replacement interval for timing belts on this particular vehicle?īernie: Yeah, so on this vehicle, it's about 90,000 miles. But yeah, it was time to do the belt from point of view of preventing anything from breaking. So it was not actually due by mileage yet, but you know, certainly by time this vehicle is now 16 years old, in great shape by the way, it's very low mileage for a vehicle like this. Mark: Was there any kind of indication that there was something wrong with the belt?īernie: No, nothing wrong with it actually, just wanted to do it based on the time of the vehicle, the odometer at about 91,000 kilometres on it. So this vehicle was basically due for timing belt replacement. What was going on with this?īernie: Yeah. There was a timing belt replacement for this huge SUV. ![]() Mark: So today's victim 2005 Lexus GX470. 24 time winners of best auto repair in Vancouver as voted by their customers.
